Oakland had a particularly mean street--East Fourteenth--that had become synonymous with poverty and crime. A few years back, they changed the name to "International Avenue" and--believe it or not, it worked! Now, it's only those of us who've lived in Oakland a fairly long time who retain those associations about East Fourteenth. The rest of the city associates poverty and crime with International Avenue. I'm certain the rechristening will likewise work like a charm for "South Los Angeles."
