this is about payback to the saudi's, all those princes showing up in Britain/US penniless working for Mickey D's and chinese takeaways. We need to do this first to make it look like it wasnt us.

Sorry, Bill, didn't follow that one.
It was, after all, the bin Laden Group that gave our pResident his first non-family million after all. Why harm them? They are our true partners in the region. Why, the Bush Admin even told a certain Deputy at FBI to "back off the Saudis" before 9/11/2001.
Just don't get your point, sorry.

best results of unintended consequences
throw iraq into turmoil. shiites get in charge south, push to isolate sunnis, grab mecca and medina. Bush too terrified of non re-election to intervene and shiites kick wahibbi's out. Iran sends peace keeping force and voila, evens for 911. Sunni/Saudi princes out. Downtrodden shiites in.

Wow!
That was impressive - I hope we never play chess. I don't think this group's thought that far out. However, there is one huge, gaping flaw in your reasoning:
The Shiites hate us as much/more than the Saudis do.

Disagree.
Persians were the ones who took hostages, remember? We backed the Iranian-equivalent of Saddam Hussein - the Shah of Iran, remember? Not to mention that we shat upon them in 1991. I'll bet they remember.
PBS had a show during the Iran/Iraq war. A reporter went to an Iraqi hospital (this was back in the 1980's at the height of the gassings, when Saddam was a good guy(tm)). At any rate, the reporter was able to interview a couple of wounded Iranian soldiers. The most telling part of the interview for me was when the soldiers said that (paraphrased without loss of intent), "America is the real enemy." The reporter was also startled and said, "But Iraqi soldiers have done this to you. You still hold that America is your real enemy? Worse than Iraq?" Neither hesitated when they replied in the affimative.
