New Adaptec EZ-CD Hosing Win98
I'm here celebrating my dad's 79th birthday. And so, when I come here, I'm naturally pressed into service fixing problems with my dad's several museum pieces that pass as computers.

Recently, he put Adaptec' EZ-CD onto his machine to support his new(er) CD-RW drive. The machine is an AMD K6 350 housing Win98. EZ-CD hosed his system such that it will crash whenever the CD drive is accessed. He also has several other CD drives that can be used in various combinations: He has an external USB2.0 CD-RW, and anotehr CD-ROM that can be connected via the parallel port. None of these seem to work either; they all exhibit similar problems.

Of course, when trying to restore the drivers, Windows helpfully suggests that you load the Win98 CD into the drive (which it recognizes as being present). When you do, it equally helpfully crashes.

I remember seeing that Adaptec EZ-CD can hose Win98. I don't remember the recovery procedure for it. Anybody remember how to recover from this debacle?

thanx in advance...

New Real Player? Doze Media Player?
I recall some harsh words many moons ago ~ to effect that Roxio 5.0? was incompatible with "late" versions of the above. Either the 'players' hosed Roxio or they mutually suicided. Believe that I saw on Roxio site some patches for the (then 'new') V.5 for these glitches.

I had to install 5.x as simplest means for proper drivers for a new CD/RW (a bargain thingie). Since then I've simply refused to upgrade either RP or M$-Anything. Actually, except for hassle of getting new drivers for late CDRWs -- I think V.4 was likely more stable (hearsay) and I liked its less-glossy interface better.

Sorry I can't recall the mechanism by which Roxio hosed / got hosed earlier -- but if Adaptec (its parent) made hardware this way, they'd be dead.

I'm using 98-SE, but dejunked via 98-lite. Whether 98- alone is weirder re CDs, don't know. My RP is V6.0.10.505 = the last version I plan to try. I HATE this shit. (It seems to mostly work on the few things I want to audition; I generally decline the new codecs they are always pushing. Did I mention I HATE this shit?)

If you do have installed - especially late versions of - RP or Doze Media too, might be worth uninstalling, running the ancient Reg Clean - which still seems to do a certain amount of junk-collecting; then reinstall Roxio 5.x (I have 5.0)

Dunno what the mix of incompatibilities for 6.0 might be, or if all play nicely with the latest (spy-bot equipped) of the toy players.

(Needless to add? 98-SE/lite will be my last acquaintance with Doze in any case.. every Bugfix from now on out will demand the Spy-EULA, which has now torpedoed W2K >SP-2 forever, too. I'll rely on firewall til I get brain around Knoppix as successor. Screw M$ 'bug-fixers/breakers')

Luck..

New The fix
was to take a system file out of the EZ-CD install and place it in the EZ-CD directory.

Apparently the Windows Media Player, Real Player, etc update the CDRW/CDR system driver and it breaks EZ-CD. Check out the Roxio web site for EZ-CD updates and see if they have the fix there. I think that they do, but I haven't been there since I switched to Nero, Nero just seems to me to be much better and easier to use.

Have you tried an EZ-CD update?

Sometimes that fixes the problem.

New Thanks
Mine ain't broke so - I plan to ignore it, though will save the refs for those who love to upgrade-then-repair. Endlessly. I've had excellent luck - for such a POS as Doze - by resisting all but really Necessary changes. No RRR since careful install in 7/01; just the way I like it.

Have heard that Nero sucks less, also. I gather it has a version of 'file at a time', also. V.handy for the 700 MB floppy backup.

New It must be using session variables
try [link|http://www.roxio.com/|http://www.roxio.com/] and then search for the V 5.X update for EZ-CD. See if that fixes the problem.

New Re "last" Micros~1 OS
Ash-

You might just want to consider the W2K problem, patched to SP2. That is the last Micros~1 OS that will eve see the inside of my system. It doesn't have the spy-bot EULA (SP3 does, however, so don't upgrade beyond SP2). You also get a more stable OS (believe it or not), real task protection, and NTFS, which is worth the price of admission, IMHO.

Re the Media players vs. EZ-CD: the version of Real Player is 6.0, and the EZ-CD appears to be 4 (Dad removed it once it started acting up, hence the problem).

Thanks for the input, perhaps I can go to the Roxio site for additiona help?

New Install eComStation
and get CDRecord (free) and AudioDataCDCreator (also free). Making CDs is a drag and drop operation after it's set up. Get WarpVision (free) to play many (though not all) movies. Real can run under Odin if you want to see that stuff, or you can take the Real codec dll and install it into warpvision.

New MM codecs for the system include ogg, mp3, and Chris Wohlgemuth has been busy upgrading various MM object classes to exploit the capabilities of the new formats.

NB- I'm a distributor in Canada, so I'm not a neutral observer. However, no steenkin rights management in eComStation.

New Thank you
Will installing the codecs restore whatever was dammaged so that we can read from the CD drive?
