Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Free fax server needed.
Here's the sitrep:

We need a network-based faxserver that people can print to over the network from Windows XP clients. Win2k Server does not allow the default fax device to be shared out. We don't need the fax to recieve any faxes - this is unidirectional.

I'm open to a Linux solution if I can sell it to my boss: I.E., it's transparent to the users, and can be VERY easily set up and maintained by somebody who's Linux skills are less than optimal.

Hell, just a Win2k Fax driver that can be shared out over the network like 90% of the printer drivers would be groovy.

New Hmm... Can W2KS's print-to-file printer be shared?
If so, and if you're not in too much of a hurry, could you work around the problem by printing to a file and then faxing that out?

Like, share a print-to-file "printer" from the server, "print" to that over the network, and then put a periodic "check for new files in print-to directory; if found, fax 'em out" local job on the server, to be run every few minutes or so.

New Nope.
Not an option - we're a moderate-volume fax setup here.

New On Linux: Hylafax
Although I don't know how easy it is to set up.

Also:

haliFAX
efax
lprfax (set up a shared lpr queue)

New Did Hylafax once about 2 years ago
I got it working eventually, with 2 years less Linux experience than I have now. I'm sure the new version would be even easier to set up.

Implicitly condoning stupidity since 2001.
New How hard is getting samba-based printing working?
And how well does SAMBA interface with Win2k-style Active Directory?

New CUPS
1) apt-get install cups-sys
2) bring up the admin interface: http://localhost:631
3) Add Printer

New My experience: efax much easier than hylafax...

...though theoretically one or both can be set up as shared print queues (the number to be dialed becomes a job property), allowing group access.

Hylafax is supposed to be the mondo server version. It's a lot happier as a dedicated service than as a onesey-twosey configuration, according to what I could figure out.

You'll find HOWTOs at [link|http://www.tldp.org/|the usual place], but they're fairly Byzantine for faxing IMO.

New Quick search shows this...
JBoss seems to be Java based, if I read that correctly.

Cap120Proxy is a client and server for ISDN services. I assume it also works with Faxes? It says it can send services over TCP/IP like Faxes.

New Okay, so here's where I'm at.
1 box running Debian 3.0 stable with a modem at IRQ 3/COM2/port 2F8

The steps I need to take: (and this is theoretical, I have no idea what I'm doing)

1. Install+Configure HylaFAX to use the modem.
2. Configure a print queue for HylaFAX (and I have NO clue how to do this)
3. Tie the queue into CUPS
4. Tie the Windows XP clients to CUPS.
5. Profit!

Please kick me if I'm wrong so far...
