If you're going to actually install Linux, you might give Red Hat 8.0 a whirl. It does a good job of detecting hardware and I haven't yet seen it fail to properly config XF86. Maybe I've just been lucky (although, in all candor, when I install I skip the X configuration and do it manually after booting off the disk). At any rate, I've run through the install of RH8 on several boxes allowing the install to configure X and so far, so good.
IMO, RH8's installation and UI is the first shrink-wrapped version I've seen where I think my mom could install it without a problem.
Disclaimer: I've never used Knoppix. I understand its gathering a cult here ;-)
