Personally I doubt that the Taliban would seriously hand Bin Laden over or actually have him under real house arrest. Bin Laden is too powerful among fundamentalists for them to actually consider doing this. It would be too much of a betrayal of what they stand for. In the muslim world Bin Laden may actually wield more influence and power than the Taliban.

I do think the Taliban are actually scared of what might happen - their attempt to assasinate Massood on Monday smells too much like a pre-emptive action aimed at eliminating the best contender for running a post Taliban Afganistan should the west decide to back him in a military take over attempt.

There has to be some form of cooperation between Bin Laden & Taliban.

as head of their military forces. If true it seems even more unlikely that they would hand him over. The house arrest has to be a ploy.

If the Taliban do hand over a genuine living Bin Laden, I'll eat my hat.

Memorably described by colleagues as someone who would "unplug you from life support so she could charge her phone."
