New For once
For once I really can't blame Bush. For him to return to the White House before it was clear that the attack was over would have been stupid and dangerous. In fact, Bush probably couldn't have returned if he had wanted to. The Secret Service probably ordered him to remain under military security until the situation was under control.

By the same token, Cheney hiding for most of the day was probably a good idea. Worse yet, it's absurd to blame Colin Powell for happening to be out of the country when the attack happened.

New No argument except.. duration of the evasive action.
Undoubtedly the wisest immediate course - was taken. I meant only that (a report from a journalist on AF-1 was source IIRC) -- it seemed that Dubya had missed the symbology of where his necessary PM speech should emanate from, given the aim of such an attack. Someone had to remind him. Maybe unfair.. HTF would any of us have handled the event?

(I held no blame for Mr. : Powell - he could hardly be prescient!)

So far today - kudos; we haven't bombed anyone back to the stone age.

New "Back to the stone age"
Well, considering that's only about 20 years for much of the area, we need time to figure out how to do it cheaply.
