New Tools for the short hike
Chad Dickerson wrote a column in infoworld ([link|http://www.infoworld.com/article/03/02/21/08connection_1.html|http://www.infoworld...connection_1.html]) on scripting vs programming. He says:

"When you're going on a one-mile hike, you shouldn't weigh
yourself down with a full set of silverware, a saw, scissors,
and an inflatable boat just in case you run into a raging river.
You take a light backpack, a bottle of water, and a Swiss Army
knife."
New Building a caste system
Programmers, scripters, software engineers, designers or whatever the heck we want to call ourselves this week are very egotistical - thinking we are God's gift to the great unwashed. I don't think I've ever met a programmer or scripter that thought they were average - and definitely none that will admit they are less than average. Given the fact that 99% of software written is crap, I'd say that we are not quite the best at assessing our talents.

Any effort to differentiate ourselves from the massive hordes of untalented and unproductive people is doomed to failure. A good classification system to establish a caste has yet to be designed.
