A surgeon who quit his job in anger shortly after he was handed a dessert spoon to help perform a hip operation yesterday lost his appeal for unfair dismissal.
Godfrey Charnley, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon, was so disgusted when he was handed the spoon that he threw it on the floor and resigned after further run-ins with the hospital management.
