Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Boot up both 98 and XP on the same hard drive.
This can be done, I figured it out.

First install Windows 98 on C:, use FAT32.

Then boot up Windows XP Pro, choose to leave drive C: alone, and set the Windows directory from C:\\WINDOWS to C:\\WINXP or some other directory. Install XP to this directory.

Boot into XP, install drives, etc. Then after it is finished, reboot until the Safe Mode Command Line with the F8 option.

Edit C:\\BOOT.INI

In the [Operating Systems] category add:

C:\\="Windows 98"

Then exit out of Safe Mode and reboot the computer. If the menu does not start up, go to the System icon in XP control panel and turn it on.

Now you can dual-boot both Windows 98 and XP on the same hard drive!

New This is a REALLY BAD IDEA.
Win98 and XP use slightly different versions of certain binary files, especially Internet Explorer.

Which is stored in c:\\Program Files\\Internet Explorer

Unless you hack the install disk, there is (almost) no way to move this to another directory - and you'll run into version differences, eventual crashes, problems, explosions, and just general Bad Stuff.

Not that this is any different from the Usual Windows Experience, but I feel the need to warn ya in advance...

New No problems so far
I am using IE in 98 to post this. No problems yet.

But I will make a note of it and when I reinstall IE in 98 I will install to a different directory. I hadn't thought about IE being different between the OSes.

Would it be better to install XP to the D: drive instead?

Yes.

Then XP will put *its* Program Files directory on D: and both OSes will be much happier. The first time you run Windows Update on this baby from XP, you'll prolly kill 98.

New Thanks for the tip
as soon as I get my DSL back I will reformat and then put 98 on C: and XP on D:, and not do any XP updates until then.

Live and learn.

Agreed. Seperate drives is the way to go.
