MySQL is a simple database that is very easy to use. PostGreSQL (or PostGRES) is a full-featured relational database, but much more complicated and powerful. I've used PostGreSQL, but not MySQL.

Two options to consider are [link\|http://www.sleepycat.com\|Berkeley DB] (not relational) and [link\|http://www.hwaci.com/sw/sqlite/\|SQLite] (relational but very minimal).
