New Dell still runs major backend systems on competitior's boxen

NEW YORK - Although it continues to outgrow the market, Dell Computer is like any other big company trying to cut costs. In fact, it hopes to cut overall operating expenses from an already astonishingly low 10% to a mere 8% of revenue.

One way it expects to reach these goals is to replace all of its Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) systems worldwide with its own Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) servers running Linux. It's a project the company started last year and expects to complete by the end of this year, says Chief Information Officer Randy Mott.

For years Dell has been trying to stop running parts of the company on their competitor's servers: Sun, Tandem (HP/Compaq), etc. Many efforts have failed or were never even started.

Just keep telling yourself: "Do what Mikey says, not what he does, Do what Mikey says, not what he does,..."

New But they ARE moving
Where possible.

What is most interesting about it is that they never even
tried to move to NT, even though that is what they have
been pushing.
New Billy's financials still on AS-400s?
New Yes they did try
A few times before I was there, they tried to go to SAP and NT; all attempts failed. Twice while I was there they tried to go to NT; both times failed. All attempts to get major parts of the business off their competitor's boxen have failed so far. (Like getting their Order Entry Management system off several Tandem Computers, sold to Compaq in 1997 and now part of HP/Compaq. Still processing every dollar of revenue from North America on them TODAY as we speak.)

At least this way it's their hardware, and it's NOT an OS by M$. Looks like Mikey is finally growing a spine and pulled the leash off his neck.
