NEW YORK - Although it continues to outgrow the market, Dell Computer is like any other big company trying to cut costs. In fact, it hopes to cut overall operating expenses from an already astonishingly low 10% to a mere 8% of revenue.
One way it expects to reach these goals is to replace all of its Sun Microsystems (nasdaq: SUNW - news - people ) systems worldwide with its own Dell (nasdaq: DELL - news - people ) servers running Linux. It's a project the company started last year and expects to complete by the end of this year, says Chief Information Officer Randy Mott.
For years Dell has been trying to stop running parts of the company on their competitor's servers: Sun, Tandem (HP/Compaq), etc. Many efforts have failed or were never even started.
