Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I'll agree with that
It has become more - not less - rewarding over time.

I can't even guess how many times I've read it. At least 20.
Why should we ask our military to die for cheap oil when the rest of us aren't even being asked to get better mileage?

New You guys have more fortitude than I.
Thanks to all for the comments and not setting me on fire ;-)
New If it's not to your taste, then why flame?
If you don't like that style of writing, no amount of telling you "But, it's a classic" will get you to like it.

New Maybe I feel like I should be flamed.
For lacking the sophistication to appreciate a "classic". I'm glad my dad's a computer-phobe. As a retired English teacher, it'd kill him to read that I "just don't get" a classic. ;-)

Funny, I'm 43 and a part of me still doesn't want to disappoint him.

Okay, not the best flame, but will it do to sooth your guilty conscience?

Yeah, I know what you mean about feeling like you still don't want to dissapoint the father figure...

New Except in your case, it's me... Right? I *said*, RIGHT?!?
New It isn't fortitude
Rather it is the ability to go, "Hey, this is a beautiful place to come for a visit. There are interesting people here, interesting stuff going on. Think I'll stay a while."

If you will notice, most of the best experiences in life don't bring us back because of the plot. "Old friends got together. Shot the breeze for a bit. Asked why they hadn't done this in so long, promised themselves to do it again soon." What kind of plot is that? Where is the thrill? The crisis to keep you on edge?

My attitude is that if I am not living life for the plot, why, then, demand it from the literature I read?

Cheers,
Ben
