New Sodium benzoate - check your soft drink contents.
Although it looks like Coca Cola prefers Potassium Benzoate. For those on a low sodium diet, I suppose. Check also fruit jelly, juice drinks, salad dressing, etc. labels for benzoates. It occurs naturally in cranberries.

The guy could have spilled some soft drink on himself. Or, maybe they use sodium benzoate to maintain the quality of their product. I have seen the listing of Sodium Benzoate followed by a phrase like "to maintain freshness".

New It's also used in whistling fireworks.
No personal experience...

According to [link|http://hmchemdemo.clt.binghamton.edu/zumdahl/docs/chemistry/07atomstructure/library/07fireworks.htm|this] page, it looks like the benzoates can be used for whistle effects.

Here's the rec.pyrotechnics FAQ - [link|http://www.faqs.org/faqs/pyrotechnics-faq/|[link|http://www.faqs.org/faqs/pyrotechnics-faq/|http://www.faqs.org...echnics-faq/]]. It also only mentions using potassium benzoate for whistle effects.

Why the IRA would be interested in sodium benzoate or whistle effects is beyond me.

HTH.

New Hmmm nostalgia..
Would love to get hands on copy of The Chemistry of Powder and Explosives '40s or '50s book by 'Davis', which I foolishly lent.

Never got as far as the sophisticated or mortar-based 'explosive systems'. We were aware of the fine-copper short shelf-life and sensitivity - for that matter, anything finely-powdered presents so much surface area as to be worthy of careful handling:

Flour, shake in cardboard box w/ small hole in top - drop match. QED

The colors were nice. Do they teach chem in high-'school' anymore? (You could just look up the element names on the web)
