booting problems: Sparc
Having trouble booting a Sparc box I have.
I recently upgraded it to Solaris 8 and re-booted. The boot process gets as far as the network and it won't boot any further. The box has a non-bootable CD so I cannot re-install. Is there any way to create a boot diskette for a Sparc box? I know you can create one for Intel, but Sparc? Any other suggestions?

get down to the ok prompt
boot -s this should get you to a root prompt without loading the network drivers. Exactly which part of the network boot is failing, eg you could be hanging on nfs and ip would still be up. Can you ping the sparc, if so try telneting in. If you post where it hangs it would be helpful. I have not seen a non-bootable cd on a sparc, which make and model is it and how did you upgrade? thanx, bill

Re: get down to the ok prompt
Bill,
Cannot even get to a place where I can 'boot -s'. I have a bit of work to do early today, but hope to try working on it again towards evening. It is an Ultra 10 and I booted it previously (Solaris 7) and then did 'boot cdrom' to fire off the Solaris 8 upgrade.
I've noted some references to firmware upgrades that are needed for older Sparc boxes. Maybe that is part of the problem?? Not sure. I did try unplugging the network cable just to see what would happen on boot. The system recognizes that the network cable is unplugged and it notes when I plugged the cable back in. Let me try 'ping' and 'telnet' and see what else I can find out.
Thanks, Maggie

to get to the ok prompt
press the stop and the "a" button at the same time or if using an ascii terminal send a BREAK to the com port. last resort of all last resorts plug a device into comm A then cycle the power on the device you plugged into the port, it will bang down to an ok prompt. It is a good sign that the nic card is recognised, prolly something simple. thanx, bill

Researched this last night
....post fell through (think it was Galeon, not zIWETHEY).
'sparc boot disk' on Google turns up anything but Solaris refs, and the only Sun doc I found was for something like making your own boot CDROM tool.
Looks like, if you can't recover via STOP-A (and that was mentioned), the best bet is to try booting an alternative OS, NetBSD or Debian Linux would be my bets, and try to repair damage there and/or come up with a real Solaris boot disk. Note that there didn't seem to be much on the topic of creating bootable Solaris media, I don't know that it's possible. Free 'nix has Sun's ass kicked all over creation in this area.

Thanks, you two!
Bill and Karsten,
So far, STOP+A seems to have worked. I'm re-doing the Solaris 8 install and will see what happens once the install completes and I re-boot. Hope it works though as I need it for a project this weekend...
Anyway, thanks for the help. I appreciate it! -Mags
