New Yep - On of our 50 is missing
is the name of a column in New Mexico magazine that lists these little anecdotes.

When I told my HS classmates I was going to college in NM I got questions like "whats the exchange rate" and "how will you deal with the language barrier".

I also got packages with customs labels on them from time to time (mail misrouted south of the border).

I am out of the country for the duration of the Bush administration.

New Hey Todd, What's yer alma mater?
(or as my sister would say, What's your alma master?)

New Aw-RIIIIIGHT!! Another Tech alum!
I'm also from Tech ('70 - '76, with a year off in '73); degree in CS.

This was during the Stirling Colgate era (which, those of us who were there during that time would tell you, was the golden age of that school!)

Also just noticed that you were there for the Centenial! Musta bee cool. I came down for the celebration, but somehow got shuttled to the Alum (read: old fart) celebrations; didn't get to the campusfor the "real" casino or the dance.

Sure do miss New Mexico!

New I just missed the centenniel
I graduated in the centenniel year, but in the first half of it - end of summer. The celebration was in the fall I think.

Yep, missed Colgate, we had the Latman years (not too bad - but deteriorating - the T cards at 49ers were banned my last year).

I used to make my money playing rock and roll at the Capitol and the Road Runner. And I got my pilots license at the Socorro County airport. I drove through on my way from Denver to CA a couple years ago - my shirt tail is still on the wall. And I stopped for a green chili cheese burger at the Owl. Still good.

I miss it there too. Sometimes I think about getting a PhD and signing on there as a CS prof.

New Oooooohh...The Owl Bar...
...puts the "grease" in "greasy spoon". However, during my tenure, they made the best damn cheeseburger anywhere. Period. (Of course, you needed the green chilis for the entire effect...and none of that damn tomatilla imposter stuff, either!!!)

Good to hear that it continues to live up to its past history.

(But what about the "shirt tail on the wall" thing. don't know about that....)

New Shirt tail on the wall
When you first solo in an airplane, the back of your shirt is cut out, labeled, and nailed to the wall. This is an old tradition. I learned to fly at the Socorro county airport. It was a long time ago but the shirt tails of the local students (many of them tech students of that era) remain nailed to the airport terminal wall.
