New And you thought the health care system was bad?
Imagine [link|http://abcnews.go.com/wire/World/reuters20021114_175.html|this] scenario.
New Actually I love the current system(now im unemployed)
I just wish I could get the same care while I am working and paying 800 a month. Why cant we expand medicaid to all uninsured folks as an opt in. Pay a pro rata basis no more than 25% of income deducted from their check. Since it is an opt in I dont see a dificulty.
thanx,
bill

New Do tell... really
You are unemployed and have medical coverage?
How do you manage this? This is not an idle question or a troll.
A couple years ago, my wife ditched her career to take care of her dieing father. She is now an assistant manager of a retail women's clothes store.
Her boss, also considered a friend, just found out that her kidneys had totally shut down permanently. She will be on dialysis for the rest of her life. She is also the one with the job that supplies the medical insurance in her family. She is scared shitless that she will lose her job, and subsequently her life, if she is fired for being unable to meet the physical requirements of her job.
So how do you manage medical care without a job? Is it a regional thing? Is it sufficient to keep my wife's boss/friend alive?
I hope you're not just bullshitting...

Thanks,
Hugh
New I personally have no insurance, my kids do
they are fully covered no co-pay. It is income based Since our only income at this time 1100 a month for a family of 6 the kids meet the program bases. For adult medicaid it is income and asset based. I have equity in my home in alaska and some cash in the bank. I would not qualify. If the person you know sold a home, buried the assets in a safe deposit box and claimed a crack habit for why the money is gone, they would qualify for both Social Security disabilty and medicaid Also remember any vehicles must be worth less than 2k(states differ). If she is married many couples divorce and still live together because it breaks the income stream. She definately sound like Social Security disability applies but she will be turned down repeatedly. Ignore that and appeal. Social Security does that to weed out people who give up easily. It took a friend of mine 8 years but got a lump sum check in the end. Check out lia^h^h awyers in her area that specialise,
good luck. I for one dont mind spending tax dollars on someone with no kidneys, Ill be there myself some day.

New Thanks, but I was afraid of that..
I don't think that their income is a problem; her husband is/was a headhunter, now self-employed.
I don't know about their assets but they are a little older than us, mid 50's to maybe 60, and they were hoping to retire in a few years. I suppose that they will have to get back to street-people status to live 'til they die... fuck. Golden years my ass.
Thanks for the info,
Hugh
New major problem for many americans
save and scrimp for the good life and watch it all go into the pocket of doctors and nursing homes. Ive had my run and expect street person status in my dotage, or a little cabin in the trees somewhere.

New My office mate is convinced that ...
the next revolution in the US is going to be sparked by people being fed up with the health care system. After seeing what my FIL has gone through the last month after falling and breaking his ribs, catching pneumonia, etc., I'm beginning to think she's right.

:-(

Cheers,
Scott.
