Intertrust had engaged in drawn out negotiation with Microsoft over it's Digitial Rights Management technology. Microsoft broke off the negotiations and issued new versions of Microsoft Media Player and other software which Intertrust claims blatently violate 11 of its patents.
Microsoft immediately engaged their standard procedures - drag the court battle out until the plaintif runs out of money.
The Sony / Philips buy adds "significant resources" to the plaintif's legal fund, and gives control of key patents to Sony and Philips. This seriously impacts Microsoft's standing in the most prominent of its 22 some odd patent appropriation lawsuits.
