I feel the call

Post #60,672 by broomberg 11/1/02 9:22:02 PM Reply	I feel the call of the mainframe. Slow. Evil. But: It has the most AMAZING utility called SDSF. Imagine a 'top' like program that also allows you to drill into the the calling shell script. On the mainframe, all code is run by wrapper scripts called JCL, which give a large amount of info and control. Also, easy to access output reports. Scary. I like it. but still way to slow. I'm currently moving some SAS jobs off it.
Post #60,691 by Meerkat 11/2/02 12:30:29 AM Reply	Arrr.. the good ole days! I spent a good deal of the early nineties knee-deep in SDSF, JCL, ISPF, and all thing IBMically acronymical. (five years of working on batch COBOL systems, basically. A wee bit of SAS, too) JCL does indeed give a great deal of info and control, but also its fair share of pain. Nowadays, telling a program which feels it's going to need, before you run it, strikes me as being a bit silly. But I can understand why it did things the way it did. Heck, I still think the ISPF editor was a pretty neat idea... (but I don't miss it enough to want and find a Windows or LInux implementation thereof) John. Busy lad.
Post #60,723 by broomberg 11/2/02 10:12:34 AM Reply	I've come to appreciate a lot about it It was so expensive and slow, it optimized machine cyles and wasted people cycles. To the machine tricks amaze me and the people wastage kills me. As far as telling the system what you need, I'm regressing to that in Unix. I've been looking at OpenPBS as a batch system. You need to tell it expected needs and utilization so it will route you to the right box at the right time.
