While I think of it, I've done enough JavaScript programming now to appreciate what it was originally intended for. You don't need all that much to have a huge affect, but you will have to trade off adding features that some people will not see because they have JavaScript disabled.
Yes, JavaScript has had a bad rap with many many sites using it in non-subtle and essentially user-hostile ways. While I don't think we've reached it yet, we may reach a point where a requested - and possibly really cool - feature will need some JavaScript. We don't have to cross (or burn) that bridge now but I think we should acknowledge that we will get to it eventually.
