Welcome to IWETHEY!

New Go ask those friendly admins.
Since you mentioned one was nice enough to let you do what you like on your box, he may have a proper static IP address for you.

One thing I found with MS DHCP is that MS add extra fields for setting things the Linux box doesn't know about. WINS was one of those, but I couldn't get DNS settings off it either.

New I can't get a static address
One of the reasons I'm allowed Linux is that I can use DHCP... theoretically. :-)

I'm not even getting ACKs back. Time out, with no response, which is why I'm suspecting ipchains and xinetd (especially since Karsten was talking about it the other day). I may have to ask him if he's getting any errors on the DHCP server.

I also have to try sending the MAC address specifically. There's an issue with some 3C90X cards (I have a 3C920, but it's treated as a 3C905C-TX) not sending the MAC addr. correctly. It shows up in ifconfig, though...

New run tcpdump when trying to connect
to verify the mac address. Sometimes it is munged.

New Well, I lied.
The admin walked by today and I mentioned my DHCP problems.

"Oh, just use this static IP then."

:-)

I did, however, determine that pump works fine when the interface is already configured. There's something odd about the broadcast receives. Promiscuous mode didn't help, either.

New Re: Well, I lied.
To connect to the @home network via dhcp I was forced to use an ID string. Pump would not work at all...and dhcp would not work without the identifier.

HOWEVER...if they're happy giving you a static address...who cares ;-)

New Tried that.
No joy. Tried dhcpcd -r -d -h hostname -I macaddress

As you said, though, who cares. :-)

New Keep trying stuff...
...as you think of it, though. It could be useful knowledge to have!
