New Recognize the sound of dying drives

New Re: Recognize the sound of dying drives
Great! Peterson's Field Guide to Dead Hardware!

Here's the most telltale sign of a bad drive - when the sysadmin shouts out "Aw FUCK!"

New And you can dance to it
In that WAV collection, I did not find the "Cylon" (BattleStar Galactica) sound I was complaining about last year.

(I have since purchased a second drive, leaving the OS on the old one and using the new one for the data, but it is still functioning despite Cylon sounds. Some speculated that some pieces of the berrings break off, making a slightly bumpy ride for the berrings.)

BTW, when there is a long time of inactivity, the harddrive(s) make some of those clacking sounds heard on the WAV's just before spinning up. Whether that is normal or not I don't know.

I have also learned that only one drive spins up at a time to prevent a power consumption overload. Thus, 2 drives == twice the spinnup time.

That one WAV file that sounds like a chain-saw is a clear give away. That is clearly a time when the nature of the sound reflects the emotion of the problem.

Mandatory cayenne enemas would have the same effect.
