IWETHEY.Employed++
Looks like Third Time is the charm. The manager/owner called me back today and offered me the job. Same rate as I made at the lawfirm, plus benefits. I'll work out the benefits tomorrow. I assume health insurance, etc. No 401K, but they s*ck these days anyway. I'd rather put my money into a Money Market or Mutual Fund and then roll it over to an IRA anyway.
I think I impressed him with the "peer to peer" updates of the database in case the server was down, and adding a "Last_modified" field in the table so they can tell when the record was last updated. Whomever gets the highest date gets updated, that way the hospital can tell where the tray is, not where it was yesterday. If Workstation A cannot find the SQL Server, then have it talk to Workstation B and Workstation C and see if it has an updated record for that tray. If it does then pull it down and update the database. He wants them to be able to Synch up to the main database, but they didn't think about the different workstations updating each other.

Congrats
Sounds like you've already got your head wrapped up in the project. :-)
I'm wrestling with a similar problem in that the main application is accessed via browser, but I want to write an offline client that can be used to view and update info. I don't envision a peer-to-peer solution, but I see where that could be interesting if you make the assumption that the fault is in the server, not in the network.

The problem as I see it
is that the network is maintained by hospital staff. The workstations could be on a different subnet than the server, and if someone futzes up security a bit on the network and the workstations cannot see the server for a few days until someone can fix it, then just have the workstations update each other until they can see the server.
For the offline viewer, consider using transaction tables and then do a big batch update when the network is back online.
The fault could be with the server, if someone does something to it, or changes an access password without telling the developers. Heck, some Nurse may have tripped over a network cable and unpluged it, and didn't notice it for hours or days.
Right now it takes Crystal Reports over six hours to do one report, my job is to make it do less than that. The program is mostly written in Excel VBA for now, and the VB conversion is on the way. One big mess, and I am the one to clean it up and get it to work better.

Awesome.
I just got one of the pre-win2k machines as a "special loan"...on migration I had one legacy app that required "non-standard" configuration.
Dell Latitude CPi 266.
Runs Linux well ;-) Now to test this app against DOS emulation...it shall be free.
They may sell off a bunch of these...they have about 100 and they aren't minimum spec for Win2k. I may get one for every room....though I could get one for every floor...and just carry them from room to room...(wireless is where its at ;-)

It may turn out to be
it depends on which direction the boss wants to take it. He is tired of Microsoft technology and is looking at alternatives. Linux, Java, Oracle, MySQL, PHP, etc.
I am setting up a test server at work now, Windows 2000 Server, SQL Server, Terminal Server, etc.
