Welcome to IWETHEY!

New I am finding it fun... again...
Based on all the stuff I ave been doing lately... Implementing New machines for long-term use... hardening other peoples crud... installing LINUX in place of Winders and NetWare (shame the NetWare had to go...)... getting some companies to actually switch to Linux on some desktops used mainly for processing... doing "the impossible" tasks no-one else thought could be done... Slowly forcing myself to actually learn PERL... (Yeah I know talk to the hand, I don't wanna know)... Big Brother implementations... Adding to it's diversity... getting some CONSUMERS weened off of Windows... Cycling out Commercial UNIX and putting in *BSD or Linux and the Applications not eve really noticing the difference... Debunking the myths of OSS being unsupported... Actually deciding to fight the battles I CAN win in IT and just letting others fight the piddly ones... Working on updating alot of old documents that have been dusty for 6-10 years, figuring out sometimes people actually knew what they were talking about... Justifying NEW networking Hardware, and a new block of /21 (or 2048) ip-addys... VOIP, COS, Scheduling Alogrithms, ECN (how it really works)... Doing Real NAT... IOW having one interface with a tons IP addys on it and handing them out on the private side (gosh I love IPTABLEs and Netfilter)... Automated Statistics Reporting on hardware useage... Automated Auditing of Login data for anomilies(sp?)... Automated Traffic analysis for anoms also... Finally getting off my duff and FIXING my Home network to be a Real Network and not a NOTWORK ;)... Actually proving to ATTBI that THEY HAVE a problem... With me having control of MY home machine and another 2 hops from theirs on CW...upto 20% packet loss either way... convincing them to use IPERF ([link|http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=iperf+nlanr|1st googled return]) with UDP showing them first hand the problems they have... Looking into actually BECOMING a LOCAL ISP for my Neighborhood (Hollywood Park of Wyoming, Michigan)... only take about $1500 in monthly subscriptions to Break Even... Plus I could do Hosting...

Geeezz I ramble...

You were born...and so you're free...so Happy Birthday! Laurie Anderson

New Or another look at it...
I am bored... cause I auotmated (nearly) everything...(geez thanks Barry) and so I'm free to do other stuff... so I get to play... that is why I *LOVE* and *HATE* this industry...

So... anyone else wanna "Learn to draw..." with me?

New Is that a job offer...? :D

Many fears are born of stupidity and ignorance -
Which you should be feeding with rumour and generalisation.

New It might be, Rabbit! It might!
As I have said once, I'll say it again... I'd drop everything in a heartbeat if ALL of us... (cept a few, and we all know whom they are)... opened up "iwethey consulting" or whatever... as long as 1) we had a sound business plan and 2) could get decent rates...

But as of right now... 1) we ain't gots any and 2) dunno if we could...

New Lesson 1...
The existence of various backronyms notwithstanding, it is Perl, not PERL.

Lesson 2...get the Cookbook sooner rather than later. You will be amazed at how often you can find the task that you want to do arranged there in nice idiomatic Perl. (Quite a few of the tasks given are geared towards traditional sysadmin tasks. For instance a short program to interactively query ps.)

Ben

New As I stated in the previous message
I thought it was Practical Extraction and Reporting Language...

So you just had to ignore the HAND... huh?

I have the three books in Paperback plus [link|http://web.grcc.edu/gfolkert/perl_cd/|this] which is actually NOT supposed to be available outside the domain...

SO you see I have alot...

New Nope, that is a backronym
As is Perfectly Eclectic Rubbish Lister.

And yup, I ignored the hand. You will probably make me regret it at Bill's on July 5, 2003. (Assuming I stick around on the East Coast that long, which I probably will.)

Cheers,
Ben

New Perl
For the demagogue in all of us ;0)
New Perl a damn poor way to do allmost everything :)
That is the beauty of it. Give me your tired, slow c and + variants, your tired basic and cobol, and in 1/120th of the code it will execute faster and cleaner with the fscking ugliest lines your brain will ever swell under.
thanx,
