New One Reason Why We're Doomed
[link|http://abcnews.go.com/sections/us/DailyNews/compensation020808.html|18 yrs = Sorry, Bye, Get a Job You Bum]

God only knows how many innocent people languish in jail. The American judicial system is a hateful creation.

New We're as doomed as doomed can be, I must say! -Ed Grimley
They don't pay someone back for doing time for something they didn't do.

Sometimes the Police or FBI labs will fake results just to convict someone. Or refuse to do a test, like DNA, that could prove their innocence. I am sure it was hard for that guy to sit there and say he didn't do it when the woman was yelling "He raped me!", and he resembled a man who did it and they picked him from a lineup. The scary part is that there are men out there who resemble me, if any of them commit a crime in my area, I might get picked up and blamed for their crime. DNA testing would prove that I didn't do it, but would they allow it at my trial?

I feel sorry for the guy, and I hope that they catch the real rapist. The Police do make mistakes, but apparently don't seem to pay for them like the rest of us.

Terence Garner is finally [link|http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/ordinary/etc/latest.html|free].

The Frontline episode is gripping television, as the small, soft-spoken Bikel shows how monstrous prosecutors and judges can be.

New Of course
all one needs to do is get people to act as witnesses and swear that the man on trial did it. Even if those people fail polygraph tests, commit purgery, are as big a slimeball as the defend is claimed to be, etc.

Judges and Prosecutors are lawyers too, and most lawyers are scum anyway. Trust me, I know this for a fact having worked for lawyers for over four years. I was fired on "suspicions" not "facts" brought up by jealous coworkers that wouldn't have passed a polygraph test and would say their grandfather kidnapped the Lindbergh Baby it if meant they could keep their jobs for another year. Plus when I asked for details and examples, they wouldn't give me any.

New This is more ominous than most daily crap, IMhO
Because it flies in the face of the Puritan ethic, so subsumed in Muricans' psyche: it is plain fucking Wrong on the face of it AND.. both the religiously-persuaded and the others: can see it in their scriptures or any other guides to umm 'decency' (?)

When injustice becomes not merely overt but.. when pointed-out, gets a {shrug} then you Know that the surface fucked-upedness is just the sunburn atop the buried cancer.

Yup we (as presently constituted) are doomed - more certainly via the cube of the time taken to address this manifest deadness of conscience.

Pure ugly.

New Just typical hypocrisy
Let's see, they don't want to open up the state's coffers to pay restitution. But if they hadn't convicted the wrong guy, they woulnd't have been paying $30k+/year to keep him locked up. So take restitution awards directly out of the prison budget.[1] Seems fair.

[1] But then they'd just increase the prison budget. Damn.

Microsoft offers them the one thing most business people will pay any price for - the ability to say "we had no choice - everyone's doing it that way." -- [link|http://z.iwethey.org/forums/render/content/show?contentid=38978|Andrew Grygus]
New There's something seriously wrong...
When you consider that Clinton is seeking [link|http://www.nypost.com/news/nationalnews/20067.htm| legal fee reimbursement ] for the WhiteWater investigation (where he was just being investigated) - yet this guy was found guilty (when he was innocent) and there's going to be nothing for keeping him locked up for 18 years.

Sad.
