Certainly the reaction was WAY overboard, but even in Chicago, where the potholes (especially after the winter snows and the snowplows scoop up both snow and street) can swallow an 18 wheeler, you just don't happen to accidentally run into a porch. The lawyers would mostly rather be what they are than get out of the way even if the cost was Hammerfall. - Jerry Pournelle

Am willing to bet that the true story will emerge that the driver - marginally inebriated, made a bad judgement either by way of the turn or lights or gaining on another vehicle & the bystanders appalled at the carnage, lost control & attacked the occupants of the offending vehicle in a reaction to what was perceived as their bad behaviour and the slaughter of the young victims. I don't in anyway condone mob justice but this story stinks. Cheers Doug Marker (yes I am an Aussie, but had a daughter who stayed in sth side doing charitable christian work & I won't even begin to tell the stories she came back with)

The driver was drunk according to toxicology tests. 7 people charged with murder for the beatings are gang members. As many as 20 people are reported to have been involved in the attack. :-( Scott.
