Journaling FS
For ext2 => ext3: tune2fs -j /dev/partition is all you need to create the journal file. Change the filesystem in /etc/fstab to 'ext3' or if you want to preserve the option, 'ext3/ext2'. This is a reversable conversion. Any recent distro should support ext3.
Note that there are other journaling FSs, several offer advantages over ext3, and SuSE uses reiser by default IIRC. But for a QnD conversion with some real benefits (having sat through a 380 GB fsck recently...), journaling offers many benefits.
