Welcome to IWETHEY!

New M got canned
She's walking down her hall, about to enter a covid patient's room. She reaches for her PPE and knocks and opens the door.

He's not really a covid patient. He tested positive a couple weeks ago and has been on the covid meds and has been showing no signs. But M still needs to put on the PPE.

He is a crazy old person who is not allowed to stand up without assistance right before they drop him into a wheelchair. But right now he's standing next to the bed about the fall over. So M runs in and drops him on the bed.

The state is in doing an inspection. The state inspector watches all this happen and is writing up M and the facility as M exits the room.

This is a mark against the facility. The action plan has to include firing M to fix the problem.

M says she would do it again. F*** you and your rules, I take care of my patients. Of course she didn't say those exact words. I would.

Unemployment agrees with M. So at least we won't starve. So now she has to decide what she wants to do when she grows up.
New It's a sad event.
Alex

"There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there has always been. The strain of anti-intellectualism has been a constant thread winding its way through our political and cultural life, nurtured by the false notion that democracy means that "my ignorance is just as good as your knowledge."

-- Isaac Asimov
New What do they say she should have done?
I'm pretty sure dropping a patient on the floor would be a violation, too.

New Her boss said she should have let him fall
The facility gets a different mark in that case. And they can always blame the patient.

In the old days you could drug or strap down people who were known hazards to themselves. Of course that was abused so it is illegal now. M considers that the good old days. She's my Nurse Ratchet.

You are not allowed to do that anymore. Even crazy demented old people are allowed to refuse medication and you certainly can't strap them down.

It takes serious repeated violence to get a patient into a lockdown unit where a nurse can jab you with a needle and put you to sleep.

At the same time, beyond it being the right thing to do to rush in and catch the guy, she risks her nurse's license if she didn't do it.

New So if I've got this right ...
Catch him: Facility gets a violation. You get fired to compensate.

Let him fall: Lose your license, can't work anywhere.

And we just go on with our day, ignoring the fact that the laws for facilities and the laws for providers are in conflict. Cool.

New Exactly
New Damned if you do, damned if you don't...
New Life sure sucksifies, doesn't it...
New :-( Nursing homes are kinda pathological.
Too often various metrics are more important than objective quality care to management.

:-(

Here's hoping that she finds a better position soon.

Hang in there.

Cheers,
Scott.
