I don't have any thumb drives with enough capacity for the ISO, but I do have a USB hard drive. Is it possible to make a bootable image on there without wiping everything?
Can you install Ubuntu from a USB hard drive, *not* thumb drive?

Presumably...
I think that if you only have one partition on the USB hard drive marked as bootable, then it won't care what other partitions are there. Similarly with copying an ISO to a partition. This might give you some ideas: https://gparted.org/liveusb.php tl;dr - you might need to repartition the USB hard drive, but you should be able to do that without data loss. (Always have a backup of critical stuff, of course.) HTH a little. Good luck! Cheers, Scott. |

This *is* my backup

:-)
Understood, but you're playing with fire if you only have one backup. Sounds like you need one of these (or something like it): https://smile.amazon.com/SanDisk-Cruzer-Blade-8GB-SDCZ50-008G/dp/B07D7WFVK5/ Could be here on Tuesday, maybe similar for you? Good luck! Cheers, Scott. |

Repartition with gparted, use Rufus or similar to write ISO

Does the machine have a CD-ROM drive?
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/MinimalCD Adding to Scott and Peter's posts: GParted is available as a Live ISO but you still need something to park it on. |

Absolutely.
What are you making the drive on? |

I'd strongly recommend spending the ten bucks or whatever to buy an 8GB thumb drive rather than use the usb hd that your backup is on. Get the usb3 drive; it makes a huge difference in how fast that stuff happens; even if the current machine can't use it whenever you do get one that can it'll be a massive win. |

Also, if all you have is a tiny thumb drive...
