See: PBS 'The Whale Detective'.
There IS positive-news out There.
There are n+many cited events of their protecting a creature from marauders. Scenes from a 'copter showing their response to a group of Killer Whales who have killed the small-tad of a smaller-whale-species. Humpbacks' gigantic fin is Master of all: they appear to despise the Killer-ones, who are well-aware of the War and properly fearful).
Amazing that, for hundreds of years homo-sap has massacred countless of these intelligent creatures, yet the Humpbacks haven't fought back on homo-sap, the 2-legged whales-of-Killing, maybe for 'sport', "watch-oil" or just eating anything in sight. A stirring tale. From a Stirring-tail.
May the Humpbacks rest a bit ... after Extinction happens (the ocean may or my not broil/boil-quite enough?)
