We have a cadre of politicians who are largely in it for the money and where they're not it's because they don't like "people not like them". And the other mob are trying to not be too much like "we want to be like that". So they're being fairly ineffective at things like combatting climate change and cultural conservation et al.

And a significant proportion of the voting public are being equally selfish so they voted the current clowns back in. So activists have started harnessing international bodies to lean on the government.
