I report from the Pacific coast of Mexico, at 20.56° of latitude, that I have finally seen the sunset “green flash” that I have read about for years. It was interesting, but unlike the 2017 total eclipse, which surpassed my most extravagant expectations, this event has been underwhelming. I suppose the description misled me: I imagined that at the moment the sun disappeared I would see a bright, diffuse green glow on the horizon. Instead, it was more of a “green glint” or “green spark”: for half a second there was indeed a tiny point of green. We have seen it again on subsequent evenings, although under less optimal conditions. Still, I was gratified to have caught it at all, and if the remainder of the year holds no disappointment more crushing than this, I will not feel myself ill-served.
