Fifty years ago today, faculty and students at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, appalled at how the US government was misusing science, gathered together for a teach-in and protest. They called for scientific research to be directed away from military technologies and developing weapons of war and instead toward solving pressing environmental and social problems. This was the founding of the Union of Concerned Scientists. The work that began on March 4, 1969—people coming together to insist that science be harnessed to build a healthy planet and a safer world—is now the unwavering mission of this organization and the many people like you who are a part of it. As we plan for the next 50 years and beyond, we are steadfast in our commitment to our mission and confident that, with your help, our most important accomplishments lie ahead.
