New Think you can kick a 43 yard field goal?

The brewery announced on social media Monday night that it would do its part to help fans understand the difficulty of nailing a 43-yard field goal.

The prize?

A free case of beer each week for a year for anyone who makes the kick.

So on Saturday afternoon, Goose Island will erect a goal in front of its brewery at 1800 W. Fulton St. Signups to kick will run from noon until 1 p.m. Kicking starts at 1 p.m.

The “beer for a year” deal amounts to a free case of a different Goose Island beer each week, chosen by the brewery. (No, beer nerds, Goose Island’s legendary Bourbon County Stout will not be involved.)

Goose Island is trying to rent a mobile goal but will make one from PVC if it needs to, said Goose Island General Manager Todd Ahsmann.

The brewery is working to get a permit to shut down the stretch of Fulton Street in front of the brewery, as it routinely does for events and festivals, he said.

Satan (impatiently) to Newcomer: The trouble with you Chicago people is, that you think you are the best people down here; whereas you are merely the most numerous.

New And nobody did it
although it turned into a great outdoor party.

IL state law prevented them from giving away free beer if anyone made it, so they replaced free beer with an all-expenses-paid trip to an NFL game of a winner’s choice – no matter how many winners there were.

Unfortunately, only 1 - 2 guys got even close; the rest were hilarious failures.

Goose Island showed class by offering $20K to a charity of Cody Parkey's choosing.

New 43 yards? Pshaw.
Let's turn to rugby. Which you should do anyway; it's like American Football but with more action and a less comprehensible offside rule. Also, you get to cheer for $OPPONENT vs both France and Australia. What a deal!

64.2 metres (70 yards in inferior colonial baboon units) by Paul Thorburn in 1986.

Apparently Gerald Brand kicked a 77.7 metre drop goal* in 1932, but that's not on YouTube.

*85yds in ICBU; a drop goal in rugby is where the player carrying the ball elects to kick it whilst still in play (i.e. it's not a set piece). So that's one hell of a kick.
New Um, where'd we get those "inferior colonial baboon units"? ;0)

It's mourning in America again.
New Yabut they were smart enough to move on in '65.
Too bad we made our own conversion voluntary.

Myanmar is converting now, and when they're done it will just be us and Liberia.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New They did not move on entirely, thank $DEITY.
A "pint" in the UK is still a proper pint (19.2 of our ounces).

That's *most* important. ;0)

New I oughta be annoyed at the (semi-)recent fad here in Finlandesa (and...
...and, for all I know, other parts of Scandalahoovia) to sell beer in imperial-baboon-unit "pint" cans. But, hey, it's hard to get upset when you're having 0.568 litres of beer in stead of just 0.5.

Same old username (as above), but now on iki.fi

(Yeah, yeah, it redirects to the same old GMail... But just in case I ever want to change.)
New Sportsball question
I believe in USian football, the length of a field goal is measured from the line of scrimmage to the goal line. The goalpost is actually set back in the end zone, and the ball is typically kicked from ~5 yards back.

So wouldn't a "46 yard field goal" actually cover more like 56 yards? That would make the 70 yard rugby kick ~= a 60 yard US field goal. Still impressive - there have only been 20 that long in the NFL.
