Comparo: That Patek-Philippe fat 18K gold pocket watch with terrestrial/sidereal/moon et al phases/mint condition etc. went for something over $1M ... go figure ... [book title] The Place of Value in a World of Things {'50s or early '60s) As for the dunked Bugatti ... them Swiss be the World's Most! anal-retentive tribe since the narsty Puritans.. and that mondo-Collector-of damn near any exotic he can get hands on.. resembles the psychopathology of the 0.1% everywhere: I got lots but it Ain't Ever Enough. We are surrounded by people with deranged emotional-brains (and they never warned us in civics classes, the bastards..) Had I been an understudy of Bernie Madoff I coulda joined these Dr. Dementos ... but then someone would have executed moi.. the Karma Fairy? It was Clarkson shovelling coal in a steam train, May in a Jaguar XK210, and Hammond on a Black Shadow. Although it was quite a spectacular race (and ended with Clarkson seriously worn out and absolutely covered in soot), Hammond was sadly out-classed by the motorbike and was not strong enough to even kick start it... Wade.

IIRC, Ashton said before that it was clear that Hammond didn't know how to start it (compression release lever, or something). That incarnation of TG was a great show and had fabulous cinematography, but so much of it made one want to pull one's hair out. :-) Cheers, Scott.
