Washington (CNN)Justice Anthony Kennedy, a conservative who provided key votes for same sex-marriage, abortion access and affirmative action, will retire from the Supreme Court.

The retirement is effective July 31, Kennedy said in a letter to President Donald Trump on Wednesday.

Kennedy's decision to step down could transform the Supreme Court for generations. Trump will have his second opportunity to nominate a justice and will likely replace Kennedy with a young, conservative jurist. That would create a bloc of five staunch conservative justices who could move the court further to the right and cement a conservative majority for the foreseeable future.

New In my defense.
I just re-read those comments. I think it's important to recall that I had a lot more faith in Americans when I wrote that than I do now. Trump's presidency has created the amount of harm that I thought he'd probably be able to pull off in two terms, not two years. And that, I thought back then, would be enough for people to flood the streets. But Americans are xenophobic, vapid creatures on the whole and there is an argument to be made that we actually deserve Trump notwithstanding the fact that in 2015 I had far too much faith in the American People and my misguided belief that they would actually rebel against right wing horror if only they could see it clearly enough.

If they don't see it now and are not moved to strike against it, they never will. Someone once said before the 2016 election that they didn't know if Trump would be the next President, but that he would be our last. If I were still living in California, I'd be working my ass off for the Calexit movement.

I don't think we can recover from Trump. I think we have to look at other nations to help us. The comedian Johnny Vegas has suggested and excellent idea. (Context: they've been discussing Melanoma's jacket and the US locking up children. The whole thing's only 4 minutes and worth watching, but my link cuts to the point I'm attempting to make here.)

It's mourning in America again.
New You're still doing it.
You're letting them win by refusing to accept that politics is all about compromise and imperfect solutions, incremental progress, and protecting (and building upon) past imperfect solutions.

Join us in the fight and stop sitting on the sidelines while the monsters try to wreck everything!!

They only win when too many good people don't do anything.

(sigh)

Cheers,
Scott.
New I don't think I'll be joining any effort to "incrementally" make America any better.
Why? Because Americans do not deserve any better. My kids were not raised to believe that this is the greatest nation on earth because "America", so while I may not live long enough to see both of them flee I do believe neither of them will draw their last breaths as Americans. And that gives me great comfort. Of course, if the country breaks up (a possibility more likely I think now than at any time since the 1860's), they might stay in one of the saner nation states that emerge from this atrocious wreckage.

What I see now more vividly than ever before is that it is not ignorance that makes 21st century America such a wretched place, it is Americans that make it such a wretched place. Americans cannot be salvaged, nor do they deserve salvation.

Methinks that, just this One utterly-prescient 'take' earns you a Get Outta Jail pass ... for the thread:

that the Dread Butch Hillary does not get to nominate Kennedy’s successor. God knows what kind of monster the Goldwater Girl might have advanced to SCOTUS. Damn good thing that mmoffitt and other principled lefties helped us avert that dire counterfactual.

cordially,
New It just needs to be said.
Anyone who voted for Trump AND anyone who sat out the election because they didn't like Hillary - risking the election of Trump - is politically an idiot.

And don't give me any bullshit about hindsight - this was all perfectly obvious well before the election.

Not only do idiots abound in America, they are proud of their idiocy.

New Bullshit.
Your statement is without merit. I've pointed out many, many times that I could have voted for Hillary Clinton more than 500,000 times and she still would have lost Indiana. So, if my ballot would have counted for 600,000 votes you'd make a decent point. Speaking of things that were "perfectly obvious well before the election", how about this from February 2, 2016?
If Bernie wins, the general's a crapshoot. If Hillary wins, count on four (at least) years of YAN Republican Asshat. Hillary cannot carry a single state in what we commonly refer to as "Jesusland" and you need at least a state or two in "Jesusland" to win the White House. At best, Hillary's results will mirror Gore's.

WHO is it that missed the obvious?

You guys have a lot of damned gall belittling my ability to "understand how things work in politics."

It's mourning in America again.
New You didn't think Obama would win Indiana.
Your willingness to throw out everything in the name of your distorted idea of purity is dangerous. The GOP is suppressing the vote and they are doing it because they know they can no longer win fair elections. Your arguments enable them.

Even in your beloved heartland of Indiana.

You need to wake up.

Grr.

It's mourning in America again.
New I was speaking of a class . . .
. . a class within which you are a card carrying member.

The class could have turned the election - but didn't bother. They deserve what they're getting, but unfortunately, they are dragging a lot of innocent people down with them.

I am speaking also of the other class - your "Jesusland". A class of people who deliberately turn off their brains with Belief. They want to be ceretain they are absolutely Right, no matter how wrong they are. This is Belief they claim to be Christian, but it is nothing of the sort - I suggest they read the book to find out why - but reading the book might cause thinking, which would be unthinkable.

If Christianity has actual validity, they will all be going straight to Hell. Unfortunately, I can't count on that, because I'm not a Believer.
New .
Edit: I'm actually sorry for the unedited post.

New Well.. ...
At peak-provocation via some fatuous Orange utterance, my own inner-Freedom Fighter has had the very same closing thoughts which are--I am unanimous in that
--true for very many Americans AND very-many Others.
FWIW
New Pretty quiet here, in these parts as..
the dysfunctional-Country's temperature is sitting at Boil (that's 212º F.) In the cool parts.
New I had to get away.
I spent most of the week-end watching World Cup. But this morning I was remembering how I felt the end was nigh when Reagan was elected. 1984 was a very troubling year for me. By comparison, 1980-1988 were good days. I can't be the only person who sees direct parallels between what is happening here in America today and what happened in Germany in the 1930's.

  • Your socio-economic downfall is due to the Jews illegal immigrants.

  • We're taking you your children to the showers to be bathed.

  • The Enabling Act rings out in Trump's own claims that he "could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose voters" as well as Guiliani saying he could assassinate an FBI director and "you couldn't indict him."

  • The President and other administration workers constant use of Lügenpresse to describe the Fourth Estate.

  • Adulation of The Leader by his supporters.

This list goes on and on. I was and am very fortunate to count among my friends several German nationals. I grew up around people from all over the world and I could never reconcile the rise of the Third Reich with my own personal experiences with German people. These weren't the sorts of folk who would tolerate the things done by the National Socialist German Workers' Party. But it is happening again. Too many otherwise non-evil people are wrapping themselves in evil.

I was so wrong about people. I thought if we got this far (and I'll admit I vastly underestimated how far we'd go and how fast we'd get there) the government would fall at the hands of a people yearning to be free from tyranny. Those people apparently do not exist. I'm all the way back to the 22 year old version of myself's view that the American People are interested in two things and two things only: When can I next get something to eat? and When can I next have sex?

I don't think I've ever felt so bad about my countrymen nor the country I live in.

New Nit
The American People All people everywhere always are interested in two things and two things only: When can I next get something to eat? and When can I next have sex?

Fixed it for you.

No, of course it's not strictly true, but if you assume it is you'll be surprised/disappointed much less often than expecting "a people yearning to be free from tyranny".

New The McGuffin is: our Puritan roots.
From the crib these antediluvian koans are/[were?] inculcated, thus accomplishing the obvious: Get Laid-NOW-or-adequate substitute ... Try!! during most waking hours.. This info then stays in the Reptile brain and explains lots about the behavior of males Here. During my lifetime, anyway.

In Scandinavia the obsession-aspect rarely happens; sure: Hormones happen, but neither of the (now 2+n genders) is forced to a lie/cheat/steal mindset, while trying to mature. While there are Evil-creeps everywhere, the dis-US Puritan underlayment--its anxiety thus Sin-ƒeare pressures--are a US-perfected mind-fuck.
