New Trying to remember the name of a fruit
It's an exotic, it can be found in relatively mainstream places like Whole Paycheck, and it's freaking delicious.

The salient property is that it's inedible before it's ripe, it's ripe for a day (or maybe even less), and then it gets disgusting. The end result is that the fruit is very difficult to catch when it's good, but when it's good it's very very good.

Any ideas?

New Re: Trying to remember the name of a fruit
specifying color and size might help - and size and shape of seed(s).

The ripening would almost describe a Sapote Blanca, but that's probably not what it is.
New That's the problem, I can't remember.
Just that the taste was incredible and they're a pain in the ass because they ripen and go bad so quickly.

Not much to go on, I know. I had thought that maybe it was a mangosteen (vague memory that the name looked familiar was all), but those don't ripen once they're picked.

New Custard Apple?
New Turns out it was astringent persimmon.
Which we can occasionally get at Whole Foods.

New Hachiya Persimmon
Yes, eating one that's perfect is like eating something else, but it smells better.

Hachiya used to be the most common, but it has been passed by the Fuyu, because people don't know how to ripen and when to eat the Hachiya, and are into instant gratification anyway.
