New Amer. Experience: a must-see on Radar, Loomis, E.O.Lawrence @ The Rad Lab! Alex??
RADAR!.. and how Loomis catalyzed the speedy development of the high-power [cavity magnetrons aka later Klystrons] .. and their interface/‘computers!' --> to automatic guns 1000x more precise than anything extant.

The Secret of Tuxedo Park: American Experience
Upcoming Broadcasts:

Episode #3002 Duration: 56:46 STEREO TVPG (Secondary audio: none)
Explore the life of the unknown Wall Street tycoon, Alfred Lee Loomis, who led a double life as a scientist and whose secret lab in upstate New York helped develop the radar technology that would alter the course of history in World War II.

Nicely chronicled with pix of bitchin nascent electronics and the mini-history of ..The Rad Lab etc. Fair to say that Alfred Lee Loomis (via his manic devotion to (doing Physic on his own Time and $$$)) assuredly jump-started this magnificent joint US/UK collaboration … which ‘Won’ the Hitler-fight more assuredly than nukes in-the-East. Within weeks 6 future Nobelists were at work at MIT! Amazing confluence of purpose + acceleration.

No link yet re web replay at American Experience. Maybe tomorrow.

Anyone here ever hear of Loomis? Only a PBS could/would give such able attention to this mondo-Story; wish I could send them more-$$ as, PBS be unique -vs- today's Vast Meeja Wasteland of formulaic Ad-vertainment of juvenile dross ... as clearly has rotted the mind-fluff of ..millions? to date.
(Though they are not alone in rotting brains, lots of Muricans still watch whatever is ON.) Automated brain toxin? how to Prove that, eh? add-to-list. Maybe cel-fones for the kiddies will appear on another list, after more is learned. Learn fast! y'hear.. some $$techno-candy may prove as toxic as other Unanticipated Consequences like Ritalin, Thalidomide and such.

(Hey.. E.O.L. used to wander the (Bkly) ‘Rad Lab’ at all hours; dropped in on moi at the Electron Synchrotron a couple PMs. Had I known the Loomis story, I’d have had some Questions which by then, he would be free to expand upon. Oh well..)

So glad I did Science, evaded Corporate options like the plague, as ..the only Carrot was about Selling stuff and making Head Office richer. In the End. N'est ce pȃs?
(How many 'career-Suits' could even follow the above history?)

New Thanks for the heads up!
It could have been on last night on the PBS station (w/six sub-channels) in FL that I normally watch. But, it's on again at 4am tomorrow and will be recorded!

Just last Saturday, I watched an American Experience show on Teddy Roosevelt and an exploration of the Amazon Jungle. He barely survived. Never heard that tale before!

TV watching is OTA (over the air) for me in my RV in FL. I'm so glad I invested in a OTA DVR for my rig! It was so I would not miss PBS Newshour or Downton Abbey while participating in the social events at the campground. The DVR will save me again!

New Got to watch the recording tonight!
Really interesting history.

Loomis sure got his wish to remain an unknown because I had never heard of him before. Given his critical role, that's nuts!

Lawrence has a building named after him.

The Rad Lab was history when I arrived, but I sure got to walk in those wooden lab buildings that survived into the 1960's.

Thanks again for the heads up!
