Welcome to IWETHEY!

New There are “shithole countries,” and then there’s
…Norway.

Jesus fucking Christ in a fucking EPA Superfund site:
Donald Trump described El Salvador, Haiti and certain African nations, as “shithole” countries during a meeting with lawmakers on Thursday, according to a report.

“Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?” Trump said, after being presented with a proposal to restore protections for immigrants from those countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, according to the Washington Post, citing aides briefed on the meeting.

The president demanded to know why the US would accept immigrants from these countries rather than places like Norway, whose prime minister he had met with the day before.
OK, not that anyone here hasn’t heard about this already, but what the fuck?? We’re nine days shy of the first anniversary of the sociopathic shitgibbon’s installation. What stale hells await us before the next Congress is installed?

cholerically,
New Since it is hearsay which countries but lets examine the list shall we?
El Salvador, Haiti (I have heard nigeria but maybe it was somalia
which of those 4 countries are not shitholes and why?
I have not personally visited somalia so I have to go on hearsay on that one.
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Why shall we examine the list, box?
They’re full of swarthy people, and Norway is peopled by Scandinavians. You know, Third World = Shithole; Northen Europe = People Like Us. Why don’t you just go ahead and say it?
New so you obviously equate haiti, somalia, nigeria and el salvador having the same grace
charm and friendliness of Norway. May your next vacation to Oslo land you in Port au Prince instead and you can extol the inhabitants you meet.

Maybe not you cannot even stand your dark bretheren in the city you live in, at least there they speak enough english for you to understand.
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New unless I misremember (and I may have)
…you, too, were among the huddled masses yearning to breathe free…cast up on this shore, ’cept you were the proper color, amirite?
New what has that got to do with the price of milk?
sure I am an immigrant and grateful for the opportunity.
I also have no issue with people from haiti, el salvadore, somalia and nigeria emigrating here.
Your whohah moment was from trump declaring those places shitholes.
So I am asking you why they are not shitholes as described.
Having actually visited 3 of the 4 mentioned shitholes I have no objection to them being called that.
So why all of the umbrage?
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New “I have no objection to them being called that”
Very, very big of you, box.
New so once again please describe why there are not
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Because people from Norway would rather be in Norway!
To answer the orange one's question.

And people from shitholes want to escape those shitholes and come to the US. That's the whole point of immigration!
New The umbrage is from the implication that the people are shit as well.

-scott
Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New ok, maybe you were not here when I expressed my views about capitalism
I believe that I can move my capital anywhere in the world to leverage the best return on assets.
If i can move my factories and money offshore to leverage my assets to make more money I am free to do so.

If my only assets are my strength and ability I can move them to the best place to leverage my capital as I see fit.

Personally I recognize borders as an artificial construct to blocking my ability to leverage capitalism.

Blocking of borders should only be used to stop criminal activity.

But that does not take away the fact that certain countries are shitholes
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Grace charm and friendliness?
Have you ever met anyone from Norway? The place is famous for its blunt standoffishness and its affection for rules of all kinds.

"Ah hello Mr Boxley. It is a pleasure to meet you. I have reported the faulty headlight on your car to the authorities. Would you like something to drink? I have also reported your car's parking to the authorities, as you have a wheel outside the permitted area. Lutefisk?"

But on the whole I'm pretty sure that to the average Norwegian, America is on the list of shithole countries.
New I have been to minnesota, pretty similar
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Isn't your claim about the "average Norwegian" virtually universal?
bcnu,
Mikem

It's mourning in America again.
New He wants to exclude *the people* from those countries. That's the issue, of course.
The USSR was a pretty nasty place ("Hi MM!"), but we didn't have any problems at all accepting immigrants from there. We accept people from nasty places all the time.

Donnie has made it clear to the MSM, and those who were trying to not pay attention, that he's a racist and they cannot avoid the subject by claiming it's just "economic anxiety" any more.

Cheers,
Scott.
New yay! you hit the point right on the head
As a democrat we can only accept immigrants from shitholes no regular countries need apply
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New "Anything not required is prohibited, and vice versa."

New BOx: Do you honestly think you're being intellectually honest in your discussions here?
Trump goes, "Why are we accepting people from these shithole countries", when the whole premise of "give me your huddled masses [of BOxleys]" is that the more of a "shithole" country people are runing from, the more they deserve a refuge -- and you pretend not to see what the discussion is about.

In fact, can you point to ANY serious discussion here in the last few years where you HAVEN'T pulled -- or at the very least, tried to pull -- that trick?

Newsflash, sunshine: It's an arsehole trick.

And you keep pulling it all the time.

So what does that make you?

And THAT, in case anyone is still wondering, is why I need a break of a year or five from this place every now and again.

If I have to be the only one calling him out on it, AGAIBN, I'm likely to tire sooner rather than later.

(Yeah, yeah, it redirects to the same old GMail... But just in case I ever want to change.)
New you are confused
I can certainly see what trump is saying. Just pointing out that the cynical "OMG he said shithole country" when the countries named are indeed just that.

The press is "breathlessly" reporting nonsense from a private meeting yet I do not recall them ever so excited when previous presidents and leader talked trash in private meetings in the past.
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Context matters, and you know that.
The discussion was about how to create and pass a DACA bill in the next few days. It wasn't them sitting around telling "3 guys walk into a bar" jokes, or something.

Just because the reporting has concentrated on "OMG, Donnie said a bad word!!11" doesn't mean that you need to play dumb about what's really going on in these discussions. Especially when you're someone who has posted quite eloquently about toxic racism that your family and friends have been subjected to...

My $0.02.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Context matters, yes it does, What does DACA have to do with haitian earthquake refugees?
a lot, he wanted to overhaul the lottery system and economic migration. Others in the room wanted to expand the lottery. Not just a DACA bill at all.
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New The time constraint is a result of him trying to break DACA.
The other stuff is his attempt to restrict immigration by people he doesn't like in exchange for restoring DACA before the deadline.

HTH.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Top story on CNN right now:
http://www.cnn.com/2018/01/15/politics/trump-shithole-analysis/index.html - "Why focusing on 'shithole' totally misses the point"

Trump supporters have been focusing on the word choice. The rest of the world is looking at what the intent behind it was.

Welcome to Rivendell, Mr. Anderson.
New maybe more important is reports that he said it deliberately to inflame his base
knowing that Durban couldnt wait to get to a reporter.
Funny how the news cycle a few days ago was inaugurating Opera like they didnt need to wait for an election.
Now its shithole 24x7 and Oprah who?
manipulator in chief
"Science is the belief in the ignorance of the experts" – Richard Feynman
New Is that what you were doing?

New Way to avoid the point.
No, it wasn't a "private meeting". It was elected officials on the clock, doing their jobs. And no, it wasn't about whsat he called the countries per se, it was about him applying the shitholeness of the countries to immigrants therefrom. But you know all this, since it has been pointed out to you several times.

More importantly, my point here was neither of those, but precisely this habit of yours, to pretend to being an utter moron whenever you're called out on something. Thank you for illustrating that point so convincingly by DOING IT YET AGAIN. So, I'll put you down for "Nope, it's not inadvertent, I REVEL in being an arsehole". (Thereby proving, by your Trumpian logic, England to be the greatest shithole of them all. Congrats, Peter!)

To the rest of you (i.e. mainly Malraux, Mike V, whoever passes for an Admin around here nowadays): Wow, it's been great. I'll pop in again in another three years or five, see if this problem has finally fixed itself, or the site has died from attrition (caused at least in part by this arsehole), whichever comes first. Or mail me an all-clear, once you've realised this shitholery is every bit as bad as Norm, and have taken active steps to fix it.

New We DAMNED WELL SHOULD HAVE been more scrupulous admitting Soviets.
Like, for instance, we should have declared war to keep this bitch out of our country.

It's mourning in America again.
New Yes, it's a puzzlement (inside an indictment/per fan.)
New I like Stephen Colbert's take.
via NY Times:
“Trump reportedly said, ‘Why are we having all these people from [expletive] countries come here?’ Sir, they’re not [expletive] countries: For one, Donald Trump isn’t their president.”

New And also Vicente Fox.
via Huff Post
“Your mouth is the foulest shithole in the world,” Fox tweeted directly at Trump. “With what authority do you proclaim who’s welcome in America and who’s not. America’s greatness is built on diversity, or have you forgotten your immigrant background, Donald?”
