New Game console recommendations?
The sprog is begging for a PlayStation 4 + FIFA 18 for Christmas. He says worst case an XBox will do, and they're clearly cheaper... But what's the difference in quality, particularly in relation to the price diff -- 20 % cheaper, half as good? Or half the price, 80 % as good?

'Nother question, perhaps bigger, is: Should I beware buying either of them, are successor boxes jus around the corner? At least the PS4 seems to have been on the market for donkey's years; if I buy one tomorrow, will they announce the PS5 the day after? Same with the XBox; the current one, I hear, is called XBox One S (or 1 S?). Buy one of those, and the day after only games for the Two S / One T are available?

(Yeah, yeah, it redirects to the same old GMail... But just in case I ever want to change.)
New The successors are already here
PS4 Pro and XB1 X are the new and improved models. Both are 4K. PS4 Slim and XB1 S are the old and inferior contenders. The XB1 X seems to cost quite a chunk more that the PS4 Pro, though. (US prices: $350 vs $500 on Amazon.)

Quality with these things is relative. The potential provided by the hardware has flipped. The PS4 S beat the XB1 S, but the XB1 X has better specs than the PS4 P. All are AMD inside. The catch will be the OS updates which can change the character of the toy overnight and without warning. (e.g. when Sony removed the Linux option.)

In the end, the determining factor may be the library behind the brands. Sony has more exclusive titles. Have sprog take a look at what else he's interested in that may not be available on the other brand.
New Is he interested in multiplayer?
Does he need to be on one or the other to play with his friends?

Drew
New Follow the games, usually.
However, many games are on multiple consoles, so as Drew said, if he wants multiplayer then he needs to be on the same console network as his friends. Hardware-wise, the two are very similar and functional differences will usually come down to which controller will you prefer in your hand.

Both Sony and Microsoft have been quite clear that they will not release or support titles that work only on the upgraded consoles. Everything for one will work on the other. That said, I've heard of at least one game with poor frame rate on the PS4 but plays just fine on the PS4 Pro.

News has just started appearing about the PS5 but Sony has given no information and no timeline, other than "it will probably happen". Experts are guessing 2019 at the earliest. Remember they want the PS4 Pro to last as long as possible and it's been out a year.

And Microsoft are even further away from upgrading the XBox because the Xbox One X only came out this month.

Wade.
New On hardware
The XB1X has, setting all the nerd shit aside for a moment, something you either don't care at all about, or you care a very great deal: it plays 4K blu-rays. Yeah, I know streaming is all the rage, but if you want the best video quality, it comes on shiny round bits of polycarbonate.

You either care or you don't; but if you do care, then the XB1X is the only game in town for 4K BD.
New Aha, OK, thanks guys!
