Welcome to IWETHEY!

New thinking abount picking up a $3500 motor home in freemont CA
and driving it home to OCean Springs to live in. I figure about 2k in gas and 10 days. I have until Wednesday to make the go/nogo
it appears to be maintained but has been sitting for a while. Since the running gear is good, that is all I am going to use till I get it home. Kind of a drastic step but rapid money drain and no job prospects makes me antsy.

New Sounds like a decent hedge..
and if you can bite-bullet and keep the driving speed ~~*45 MPH {!!!} you might even double your expected fuel (gas I presume) mileage ..while pushing A House through all that air, eh?
No fair coasting down t'other sides of mountain passes, y'hear?! You be daid when the brakes turn to lava.

* I once piloted a Rent-A-Van full of furniture etc. from L.A. to Sonoma CA; the son, picking over deceased parents' house to be sold: wanted to return Fast. So we did
(in contact via primitive walkie-taljies du jour.) Was cruising that sucker in the 80s ... and IIRC the Gas Stop(s) were ~ 5-6 m.p.g. QED

I'd think that your nonpareil telecom-lore--in a country with fones-glued-to-heads/all waking hours
--should launch a bidding war, eh? (but what do I kno.. :-)
New Link?
New no link, is in the yard next to the speed shop my friends son owns

New Wow.
Google says around 34 hours of driving, ~ 2300 miles. At 10 MPG (might be high), $2.50 a gallon, that's about $600 for gas one way.

If it's been sitting a long time, it may need tires (dry rot), and may need belts, hoses, and who knows what else. I'd be nervous about taking something like that across the desert and the mountains. But I'm naturally cautious. ;-)

Here's a 1997 in East Texas for $3000. Dunno if it's too small for you. I found that by looking around here.

Why a motor home? You still need to park it some where and have access to utilities. Why not a trailer instead? Yeah, trailer parks. But much fewer things are likely to go wrong, and if you have a small enough trailer, you can rent a truck if necessary to move it somewhere else.

A neighbor had a huge (but not bus-sized) old motor home (with some 440 Chrysler V8, I think) in their driveway for years. The old man of the house died, and the family spent a few days getting it running to be able to sell it. I never saw them drive the thing before that...

No need to answer, and I'm sure you've thought about all these things.

Best of luck!!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Water leaks in body are a killer in old rigs.
Even if the truck part is OK, dry rotted wood can be a problem.

Check it out before you lay out the cash!

Class A or class C?

But, if good rig, lots of BLM space to camp on for next to nothing in the West.

Just to stay away from winter, I'm in my class-C in Central FL as I write this.

New no dry rot, per friend. 2 seams need to be redone.
not so much interesting in the camping as end stage, paid for housing unit.

New I cant tell class differences anymore it is a flat nose rig
it has been many years, are the truck stops still rv friendly? Not going to plug anything in until I get home so all connections can shake out. Will need showers on the way.

New Re: are the truck stops still rv friendly?
Yep, at least the Flying-Js are. Many have special RV areas for parking overnight. I use the one in Brunswick, GA as halfway stop between home and FL. I get 3 cents/gallon off with a loyalty card to boot.

Also, many Cracker Barrels have an RV spot for staying overnight. Also, most but not all Walmarts let you park overnight. Local ordinances sometimes prohibit that. So, you need to ask "the desk" to avoid a cop's knock on the door in the middle of the night.

Out West many casinos have free overnight parking or at least below market rate camping.

New airline tickets purchased mostly packed

New back, left sunday at noon just arrived in mississippi a few hours ago.
averaged 65 mph and the 454 motor pushing dual axles averaged 7.7 mpg. No hiccups at all in the power train. Tomorrow I check all of the other systems and change out all of the compartment locks. (one key badly bent, key makers cannot duplicate.) very pleased so far.

New Sounds great. Congratulations!
New At that speed, probably typical for that vintage.
Hopefully next to no oil consumption.

Just curious, does key for storage compartment says CH751 on it?

New at 55 mph same gas usage. No oil used. No designations on key
at 75 mph gas consumption goes to 5.5 mpg. Also higher revs are not good for big blocks, they like to deliver a lot of power at 2500 rpm

New For the convenience of dealers, CH751 would open anyones RV compartment.
