Special magic has to be done to glass to control the stress so that minor scratches, etc., don't cause catastrophic breakage (that's why glass blowers have ovens to slowly anneal their work before they are finally cooled to room temperature).

The fact that LG let some obviously high-stress glass be used in such an important part on their flagship phone isn't a good sign. :-(
