New TTAC: Scott Adams wants to buy a truck. Or does he?
New on buying a truck
go to the ford dealer
( I have too because although I love chevy's the smell of my ass behind the wheel immediately makes them start shedding parts.)tell them you want a truck. Listen to it when you mat it. Does it burble in the correct key for your likes. Get the 302 they have been making the damn things for 30 plus years so they have it down. Does the radio cover the vroom vroom sound.Yes buy the truck
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New Raptor doesn't come with anything as small as the 302 :-)
He's not buying a truck, he's buying a toy. Check all the boxes on the list. I'm sure he can afford it and dealers generally only balk if you want something with fewer options than what is on the lot.
New The guy at TTAC seems right about the straight-six vs the V-8.
When I worked for the Air Force one summer in the late '80s, there was a brilliant guy there who had a recent straight six F-150. He said the V-8s were gas-hogging dogs and anyone sensible would buy the straight-six.

One wants low-end torque in a truck that is expected to do actual work. ;-)

Cheers,
Scott.
New I6 is always a nicer engine than a V8
Perfect primary and secondary balance ftw.

But trucks - for non-commercial/business use - always strike me as a bit daft. A transit van carries more, using less fuel, and keeps it dry in the rain. And the cargo bed is always way up high.

For most people with families, surely an estate (trans: station wagon) is more practical, especially if it's a Subaru Forester or Outback or similar.

That goes double if you have to go into town and park the thing.

So - tell me: why trucks?
New Mas macho.
New No! No es mas macho. Ricardo Mantalban es mas macho!
New you calling my 5ft 2in 105 lb wife Mas macho? only truck we own is hers :-)
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New Sounds about right
Mine went grocery shopping, came home with a Tacoma to carry the stuff...
New offered her a new vehicle for her birthday, last one was bought in 2005
had her test drive the fiesta and focus, she wanted the f150 stx
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New Trucks are a bit more versatile
Parking is not really an issue (in the US). Slots are still sized for a Lincoln Towncar and a pickup fits easily.

Getting things in/out is easy: just chuck it over the side. No need to fuss with/about the seats. A van has to be stacked front to rear. The occasional load of dirt is not a problem. We cut + split our own firewood. The lumber truck cannot make it all the way to the house. Without access to a pickup, getting the sticks to the woodshed would be a lot less fun.
New I have a plastix 4ft x 2 ft xmas tree container tied to the back of the truck
groceries go in there so they dont roll all over the bed. A bow knot means a single pull then put the container on the ground so I can fill the bed
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New Gas hog is about right
I had one of the last regular 302 Mustangs for a while. At speed, consumption was not half bad (26 mpg, the Subaru that succeeded it 18 years later got 30 on half the displacement.) In steady traffic, however, 12 mpg was doing well...
New So what would you recommend
For pulling a tiny house?
I have another 8 months of "supervision", then another 6 until my lease is up. Then I'm gone.

Goal is a tiny house on large plot of land somewhere far away. Right now I have a small rental and would not mind going even smaller.

So we need to build it here and tow it there. What used truck would be powerful enough with a decent repair history?
New I have a question for you
From what I have read and watched a tiny house costs from 23k if you build it yourself to 40k why do all of that work when you can have
http://gulfport.craigslist.org/rvs/5711142195.html
http://gulfport.craigslist.org/rvd/5700006113.html etc?
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New That was my thinking as well.
Though financing, insurance, etc., might be easier with a "real" house.

Something like this (not necessarily that particular one) might be worth considering. It's not going to break, and it's not going to depreciate any more either. Gas would cost a mint, but if you don't drive it much then it's not a major concern.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New small chevy motor in a ford frame? not what he needs.
Get a chevy truck cheap with a blown motor. Put in a crate 350, now it is like a new one.
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New I was thinking more of the chassis.
Yeah, a Chevy V-8 in that truck is a bit of sacrilege.

A neighbor had a truck like that that he used when he redid his roof (rolled it up to the edge of the roof and shoveled the old shingles in). It was quite a beast. I think it had the original motor.

Cheers,
Scott.
New A possibility
But the preference is to pack as much usable space into something that moves rarely, which means upper level lofts. On the other hand, we might start with something like you pointed to, and build on site after a year there.
New Ack. Got my marching orders
Buy something new for a payment of $225 that can tow something big. Shit. Is that possible?
New Buy? Sounds tough. Lease maybe? Remaining 2015 model maybe?
Look at other brands than Ford and Chevy if you need something less expensive.

I went to Edmunds and poked around - Fords were astronomical. Maybe Nissan?

Good luck.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Specific model/engine configuration?
New Dunno.
If you're pulling a trailer, you want a lot of torque and a HD suspension. Both of those things add a lot to the cost. I don't even know if Nissan has a truck that they say can tow a large trailer. Let's see... It looks like they do.

Nissan Towing Capacity.

Check out http://www.tomraper.com/towguide

E.g. this trailer is 5540 pounds.

HTH a little.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Pick two

Drew
New Possible alternative.
Maybe just pay someone to tow the trailer when you're ready to move on? Maybe $2 a mile one-way (in 2010).

A new truck big enough to pull a lot of weight is going to be horribly expensive. Moving it across the country could cost $6k if you pay someone $2/mi. That's about 6-12 months of new gigantic truck payments (neglecting insurance). If you spend $30k+ on a new truck, you're going to lose a bundle with depreciation (most people who want pickups want new ones).

It looks like Ram has the best incentives now so they might be worth checking out. A friend used to say that Dodge trucks had weak front-ends. I don't know if that's still true or not.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Scott.
New Never mind.
Brought M into reality.
New :-)
New cmon down, finish here, get truck later
always look out for number one and don't step in number two
New And the elevation is...? :)

New jdidnt flood in the rain we were having and during katrina lost on sheet of tin from the roof
3 miles from beach, plenty safe. Actually looked at it for myself. I liked it but MJ started talking about construction she would want to start immediately so I lost interest. One acre, lot of room, new pump and plumbing. I like the outdoor kitchen and canopies

New You could consider buying a used "5th wheel" trailer.
Check out eBay and other places.

New Just had a couple of relatives do that
http://www.doityourselfrv.com/combination-teardrop-trailer-tiny-house/

TX to VT. Pretty much wore out the motor of the F-250 they started out with, although it did have 260k miles on it when they started. They used an F-350 to haul it up the "driveway."

Personally, I'd prefer a diesel to do something like that but I can't really pick one. This thread may give you some leads:

http://www.rvforum.net/SMF_forum/index.php?topic=20434.0

The trailer weight in that thread is close to that of the Tiny Drop at 8000 lbs.
New Are you limiting yourself to trucks?
I know there is a nomenclature clash, here, but are you limiting your choice to pickups? SUVs can often tow up to 2 tons and so can many large sedans.

Wade.
New Nah
And I just delayed the decision for a year so plenty of time to research it.
New it is like choosing an OS clearly identifiy what you want it to pull then look for a truck

New I liked the rental suggestion
Why buy something with extreme power for very few required uses, when I can hire a professional to handle it for far less total money. Right now I drive a car I bought for 800, put 1,000 into, and have put 20,000 miles on it. Drive it till it dies, don't go throwing away cash unnecessarily.
