I decided I needed to just do a reinstall. First step I'd have to put my /home on a new partition. Didn't have enough free space, so I started backing up all my pics to Google Photos. Figured I'd back it up, delete local, create the partition, reinstall, then copy it all back local.
Finally finished copying everything and rebooted to do the install, and didn't have the thumb drive in. Fine, let it boot up and see what happens. Hmm ... still no window manager, but I get a popup prompting me to upgrade to Ubuntu 16.4. Sure, why not? I was about to install it anyway.
And it works. I swear I upgraded already from the command line, but this time it worked.
I'm still too old for this shit ... plus 15 days.
