New MP3 CD Player ?
I have one in my car (Aiwa, seems good)
my question is:
is there any reason why it can't resume play in the middle of a track like it does with audio CDs or is there some technical reason why it has to go back to the start of a given song whenever you stop playing that song and then start up later?

New I wouldn't think so.
I'm at work right now playing mp3s off of a CD through winamp. I can pause and restart songs, position anywhere in the song to start playing, and so on. I don't think it's a technical issue with playing mp3s off of a CD. Check with Aiwa? My thought would be a software issue.

New Easy, it sucks
I have one, I should know. I'm looking into replacing it before this summer gets any further along. I'd love to get the Visteon (Ford) version of the PhatBox by PhatNoise but they seem to be taking their sweet ass time getting the unit out. Soon, soon, soon. It's always soon... I really want to go back to my old stock head unit. Not only does it look good in my car, it also features automatic volume control which I really miss. Why must most aftermarket head units look so flashy and ugly? Oh yes, I'm never buying another Aiwa product again.

Check out the JVC KD-SX980. It has resume. Read the user write-ups at [link|http://pub56.ezboard.com/bhighwaymp3|http://pub56.ezboard.com/bhighwaymp3].

If you're looking at replacing the Aiwa you should look into the Kenwood KHD-CX910 Music Keg which really is the PhatBox. You'll need to buy a Kenwood head unit for it.

There is also the Alpine CHA-S634 which is a 6-disc changer that supports MP3s. Again you'll need an Alpine head unit for it.

New Two confirmed
The JVC unit I previously mentioned and the PhatBox powered Music Keg both have resume. There may be a few more but you'll have to find out for yourself. (I haven't looked further.) Check that site I gave you for user reviews.

New Re: why it has to go back to the start of a given song
Well MP3 is compressed data which may (I don't know for a fact) depend on prior processing results do be able to decode and decompress what follows. Unless these intermediate results are kept, it may not be able to pick where it left off. "Adaptive" compression techniques build decoding tables "on the fly".
