I remember well Brood II (2) in Upstate NY in 1979.
Crunching their red eyed bodies as they littered the roads and putting up with the insistent and incessant cacophony of their mating calls. There were billions in Cincinnati in 1987.

I remember being at a Wendy's drive through and one tried to fly into my mouth as I was ordering. They were everywhere. It sounds like your experience was similar.
