New If you believe Mnemosyne, it was ever thus.
(She works for Disney, I think.)

Dang. I missed an entire screenwriting thread, and it’s too much of a pain in the ass to go back ans respond to everything. Two points:

(A) Before “Save the Cat!” ruined Hollywood, Robert McKee ruined it, and before him, Syd Field ruined everything. In other words, there’s always some screenwriting guru who ruined everything.

(B) James Bond, a character created by a British writer, played by British actors, in movies made by British directors, is an example of American imperialism? Oooookay. Honestly, I would say that the fact that the very shittiest Bond movies take place in the US is a sign that the character is intrinsically British and can’t be easily fit into American archetypes. We may love Bond, but he’s no more American than Dr. Who is.

A is interesting, and not unexpected if one thinks about it. Still, mclaren's rant was pretty good.

B seems pretty self-evident to me. I didn't understand why several in that thread were talking about Bond being somehow about America.

Cheers,
Scott.
New Agreed there has always been that sense of 'the ersatz' in Tinseltown products
But am unaware of some schematic diagram whereby even the time-points for jelloware manipulation are calculated! (And I do recall Jos. Campbell's infatuation with the mythology of Star Wars ... and he seemed quite pleased (given the zeitgeist of the late '70s.) Surely he got an A+ in Myth psych.

Hardly shocking a revelation, of course: there's been no time for re-Illusionment since the horrors of the 8-year Shogunate followed so immediately by the tacit acceptance of Patriot Act mindset, Security pandering and the effects of fine battles--not 'lost', as re facing the absurdities of for-profit penal-, medico- matters etc.--those expected fights for truthiness never even opened with a salvo.

Nope, no re-Illusionment in these parts.. see any elsewhere?

Dreamt I was trying to look up a factoid re 'The Enlightenment' in a trusty historical encyclopedia. But when I went to the page in index, the whole chapter was missing.
