From 1993 to 1996 I took part of my salary/401K as US Savings Bounds, Series EE, $100USD each. This was back when I had a very good job, but got downsized in 96 when 10% of the employees got let go.

If I have to, I'll cash them, but does that mean I will get $100USD plus interest, or some amount below $100USD? If things get tough, I'll cash a few to pay off bills and debts. If not, I'll save them for retirement.
