New interesting physical
had the annual and blood work done. Years ago the doctor was sent nasty letters from insurance companies from when I had insurance why I wasn't on statins for cholesterol. She wrote back that I refused to take them.
Now my cholesterol is just fine within limits. My weight is the same for the last ten years. My diet is the same, nothing changed. My drinking and smoking habits have not changed. One test came back as elevated, the nurse was all over that. I explained that I will not be treating it. She was confused and asked if I had discussed it with the specialist. I explained to her that I will discuss it next year with the specialist. Sigh, people want to do aggressive medicine when there is no reason. When I meet with my doc again in November I will explain it to her real slow.
Any opinions expressed by me are mine alone, posted from my home computer, on my own time as a free American and do not reflect the opinions of any person or company that I have had professional relations with in the past 59 years. meep
New "Sigh, people want to do aggressive medicine when there is no reason."
Well, Yes, there is a reason - it's all about the money.
New There was a brou-haha about statins here a few months ago.
Very well-regarded science program aired a special about how we treat cholesterol. Whilst there was, unusually, some unbalanced reporting, one fact stood out: statins are prescribed an awful lot and doctors are under pressure to prescribe the more. This was presented alongside reports that statins are probably not useful for most people.

Another well-regarded reporter on the same network who actually has a medical degree (and keeps it up-to-date) was scathing about the criticism of statins. I lost a lot of respect for him that day.
