I would consider SQL knowledge to be necessary for a back end developer regardless of whether or not they are actively creating SQL, mainly because someone who knows SQL is going to be better at anticipating problems with the code they're creating that uses the database.

I have a working knowledge of using SQL, but I am no expert at it. For instance, I used to have a former coworker who worked for AIG before we met. He said that they had stored procedures that ran 8,000 - 10,000 lines long. I'm sure you'd believe the hoops they had to jump through to debug those suckers, because that's what management wanted.

If that's what they expect, then I'm not their man.
